Game On Expo at the Barbican

Dateline- Tuesday 6th August 2002

Mission- Explore the history of computer gaming

Running from the 16th May to 15th September the Game On exibition is a look at the history, culture and future of videogames. It's nicely layed out and a damn good laugh if you there are a few of you. I went with Adam (aka Vroomy) and owned his ass on almost everything we played. The only exception was on the starwars machine because it became unplayable seconds after this photo was taken.
He still implies he didn't do anything but I think he couldn't stand to be beaten again :)

The show looks at the earliest example of gaming (1962), the hayday of the arcade (late 70's and 80's), the advent of the console's, the ideas behind game design and where the future of gaming is headed. The whole exhibition is designed to be interactive with a huge number of working games on display. The highlight of this for me was to be Tron which I spent an insane number of hours playing as a kid. But the fates had it in for me and it turned out to be the only machine that wasn't working.
God damn I would have loved to play this :(

It costs 11 quid to get in which sounds steep but we were shocked to find out that we spent over 3 hours there and barely noticed. If you get there when it opens at 10am you could probably stay till 6pm with no problem if there are a few of you, most of the games are multiplayer so it makes it more fun. All in all a very good exhibition that shows a good deal of enthusiasm by the people who have set it up. The official website can be found here.
